Mini Project: Soundproofing my 45
Hi guys :D.
Been undertaking a new project to make my 45 a bit quieter and nicer. I've been tempted a few times by an upgrade to a 75 but really my derv has been so good to me and so reliable I might as well keep her. I do want to make it a better motorway cruiser though.
First thing I want to do is eliminate as much road noise as possible. Then I'll move onto maybe making it a bit comfier... (75 seats?)
So far I've:
All in all this has made a marked difference so far.
The material I'm using for deadening is... roof flashing tape! £13.99 for a big roll, and works brilliantly. I'm using a heat gun to soften it up and mold it to shape, and using 2-3 layers at a time, but it really makes panels thud instead of ting. One roll is enough to do both front doors with 3-4 layers.
The soundproofing material is about 1/2 inch thick with very thick fibres and a waterproof bitumin back. Got a big roll (enough to do all of the above) from a local vehicle upholster for £35 including a can of spray glue.
It makes a real mess as the fibres come out and sticks to everything, but hopefully it'll vacuum off.
It's definitely quieter, and the doors sound so much nicer to open and shut, but it's still noisier than I'd like. The engine is still loud around town (good old l series ) so I'm guessing the firewall would be a good next bet.
Does anybody else have any suggestions of the best way to reduce remaining noise? Tyres are quiet until about 50mph, not good enough for motorway.
I've noticed the roof is very tinny on these cars, but no idea if deadening or soundproofing here will help. Also not sure on the best ways to soundproof the engine.
Not bothered about weight, I doubt adding 20kg of weight will kill the mpg much on a car that already weighs well over 1300kg.
Any suggestions or ideas people have to make the car quieter or more comfortable would be greatly appreciated! I've got 4 new tyres though so I'm not looking to change those.
Cheers!

So far I've:
- Removed all door cards, sound deadened the outer and inner skins
- Stuck some thick soundproofing jute to inner door skin and door cards
- Applied sound deadening and multiple layers of jute to rear wheel arch (inside the car)
- Deadening and jute in boot floor and wheel well, also under rear bench
- Two layers of jute under front footwell carpet
- Applied deadening to inside of one rear wheel arch, painted over with thick layer of tetrosyl (still got others to do).
