MGF. Tapping noise and smoke.

Hi there hope someone can help.



I have a 63000 mile 2001 plate MGF. I love it to bits. I work away a lot. 3 weeks ago, I drove it to work, a 160 mile commute each way. As always it started great, drove beautifully, got to work with no issues at all. Go away on detachment for 2 weeks. On starting up after the short lay up, there was a tapping noise coming from the engine and also smoke out of the exhaust, grey not black. I thought it may just need oil circulating around the engine so let it run until the oil was warm, but the tapping noise and the smoke are still there. Oil is clean up to level and looks like its just been put in as it always does.



Any ideas please? Can it be driven to my favoured garage near home? It was perfectly fine when I left it, noisy and smoky 2 weeks later. Appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
