Emissions - The ultimate solution !
So I took my 214 for it's MOT.
I had checked everything I could and was confident it was in great shape.
I have owned the car for 7 years now and at every MOT it ALWAYS fails on JUST the emissions.
This year it was just the same. Only failed on emissions.
The oxygen sensor is a fairly new NTK (better than Bosch apparently) and the cat is a brand new bosal .
I had checked that the sensor was switching 0.2v to 0.9v which it was twice a second when being driven at a steady speed.
I was watching the test being done and the tester heated the cat up when prompted by the emissions machine to hold revs at 2500-3000 rpm for 60 seconds. Then the test started and the figures for CO and lambda were way over with HC around 140ppm.
The garage then tried again but still a fail.
The tester was very good and said he would keep on trying.
So I suggested that perhaps he could hold the revs at 5000rpm for several
minutes to heat the cat. He was reluctant to do this but I told him I would take full responsibility if the engine blows.
So thats what he did. After 2 mins there was a deathly smell from the engine bay and he wanted to stop. I said no keep going it will be fine (the temp gauge was still just below half). After another 2 mins I looked under the car and could almost see the cat glowing! The workshop was starting to fill with really bad fumes !!! So I said start the test now.
The instant the machine showed the figures they were ALL green
It held these low figures for the entire test.
So I obtained a pass with the lowest figures they had ever seen on an older car.
Here is the result:
Fast Idle
CO 0.01
HC 000 PPM
Lambda 1.01
Natural Idle
CO 0.05
The guys at the garage were stunned to see those figures especially the HC 000 PPM.
The engine was so hot that after the test ended the car was shut down with the temp gauge still at normal and when restarted a few minutes later it was at 3/4. The fan still running and I burnt my hand on the bonnet support !! Must have been the massive heat soak.
When I got home there was some gooey black sticky deposits in my usually spotless header tank. Not oil so think HG is ok
I think it will be fine as not a drop of coolant lost.
So guys, what do you think of that.
Who here can beat those emission figures ?
I believe that most of the Rovers that fail emissions would pass if properly heated up. All the money wasted on sensors and cats and the stress of retests. All the cars scrapped for no real reason.
