Rover 25 1.4 temp gauge not working

Hi all need abit of help..



My mate has a 1.4 rover 25 bubble shape



His temp gauge has never worked on the dash he only got the car about 1 month ago.



I have checked/bleed the system of air.



Fitted a new brown sensor but i think this is for the fan as the fan kicks in when you unplug it and still the gauge is not working.



The only other water sensor is a blue has only 1 wire going to it (located next to the brown one) but the part's place only have a brown & black, black one doesn't fit the blue plug



What sensor does is for the dash??
