Starter issue

I’ve got a starter and electrical problem on my 2003 Rover 75 CDTI.

Last week I suddenly had a loss of power and realized that the temperature was at the maximum. I stopped, the engine was very hot and I saw some cooling liquid under the engine.

After one hour I’ve added 5 litres of cooling liquid, the engine was less hot and I drove the last mile to reach my home. I’ve ordered and changed the pipe from the fuel heater that was leaking.

When I tried to start the engine, all the dashboard indicators were switching off each time I went to the third key position.

Browsing this forum, I saw that the solenoid of the starter motor was a current issue. I’ve ordered one and replaced it. Nothing changed.

The engine oil is fine. The battery is also fine.

The drain hole of the ECU compartment is clear.

The symptoms are:

- - When I set the key to the second position, the dashboard indicators are displayed with a reduced light. The horn does not work. And when going to the 3rd key position, everything switches off.

- - If I disconnect the starter motor and the generator. The dashboard indicators are fine even on 3rd position and the horn works. Of course the engine won’t start.

- - If I connect the starter motor and disconnect the generator. The dashboard indicators are fine and the horn works. And when going to the 3rd key position, everything switches off.

Could it be a side effect of the overheating of the engine ?

Could the starter motor and the generator be damaged at the same time ?

How can I test them ?
