Which TF should I buy?

I'm about to buy a low-cost MGTF on Ebay but not sure which model to go for. I know about the head gaskets, glass rear screens, and peeling lacquer, but not sure which engine to go for. I'm 68 next week and no longer a boy racer! I am happy to cruise country lanes. I like good fuel economy, but also don't like wheezy underpowered cars (have owned a Scimitar GTE, Triumph Stag and Spitfire, Jag XK8 but not expecting supercar performance) The MGTF would be used as a fun car as have a Volvo V70 for load carrying, and a very economical Megane Coupe for long journeys. Is the 115 or 135 power unit wheezy as some describe them or is this just what the 160 owners say? Help soon please as buying for my birthday this week!
