Should JLR buy Lotus?

On the face of it buying Lotus wouldn't appear to make much sense. After all what would JLR want from Lotus that it couldn't do already? But there is another reason JLR might want to buy Lotus. JLR is struggling for engineers. They simply can't find them fast enough to meet their ambitious plans. Buying Lotus would help them address this issue. JLR also lack capacity but the Norfolk manufacturer has plenty. At least enough for JLR to make models like the F type and Defender there. The Lotus factory would probably need a lot of investment. But JLR will need to invest anyway in new plant.

So as a means to expand JLR I do wonder if JLR may be tempted to buy them out. It would then leave a question of what to do with Lotus. In my mind Lotus is an opportunity for Jaguar. Firstly they could develop a small sports car to take on the BMW Z4. And they could also develop a model to replace the XK. Lotus could take advantage of this by using the Jag sports car range as the basis of a new Elise, Evora and Esprit.

What's not to like?
