Sound after removal of thermostat

Hi I wanted to ask after a removal of a thermostat should there be a tapping noise on tick over or not is that normal? My mechanic said the has removed the pipes either side of the thermostat to stop it sticking - Its obvious he doesn't know what he is doing and I wont go there anymore but just out of interest how much of a bodge does it sound like? the nearest place to me is MG Lifestyle that im going to contact but just wondered should I even run it? thanks adam :)
