How to adjust a new gear cable ??

Hiya, I have had the misfortune to have to replace the lower gear cable. I purchased a replacement which is longer than the original but I am told this is now a replacement. I have tried a cable from a breakers but this cable didn't like my car at all.

I can get all the gears except reverse but to get reverse I need to extend the adjustment on the cable unfortunately the gearstick then hits the switch panel in 1st 3rd and 5th.



Any suggestions ??
