The MG3 and Range Rover Evoque have enjoyed huge sales successes
The West Midlands motoring industry is firing on all cylinders with Land Rover and MG UK sales in overdrive for the key month of September.
Land Rover smashed its own UK September record with more than 12,000 sales while Longbridge-based MG UK more than trebled its turnover for the month from 2013 to 357 sales, with around £12.5 million worth of new MG3s sold so far this year.
The Land Rover sales spree saw the Solihull-based firm sell a total of 12,142 vehicles, an increase of 612 on last years record performance.
Jaguar Land Rover spokesman Ken McConomy said the continuing sales successes had seen the vehicle manufacturer more than double its volumes globally over the past five years.
It has been a record September in the UK for Land Rover. In the year to date, we have sold 51,277 in total, which is a five per cent increase on last year.
The Evoque is our biggest-selling car and the Range Rover Sport and the Freelander have also done very well. The September performance has been very positive and that is down to strong demand for our products.
In 2009 we sold around 200,000 on a global basis and last year we sold 425,000, so we have doubled our volumes since then as a business. But it is still tough out there, we cannot take anything for granted.
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures show that MG UK sold 357 cars in the UK last month, and is on target for its record sales year since the Chinese-owned company launched in 2008, with 1,850 cars sold so far in 2014 compared to 504 for the same period last year.
MG spokesman Guy Jones said: The MG3 has been a real shot in the arm for us. It is a Fiesta-sized car for under £10,000 and is our most successful model so far.
We now have 53 dealers. With the addition of the MG3, it has enabled us to continue to add to the dealer network the business is in a lot stronger position coming to the end of this year.
Of the 1,850 MGs sold so far this year, around 1,400 were MG3s, with the remainder MG6 models.
