Alternator problem

Driving home in the dark and the headlamps and dash lights suddenly went very bright and the charging light came on. The engine was doing 4000 rpm. When I slowed down it went back to normal. I'm guessing voltage regulation problem. Can anyone throw any light on this? (No pun!)
