Overheating 25. Driving me mad!!

Hi.

This started about 3 weeks ago, & I'm at a loss to figure out the cause. I strongly suspect a difficult air lock.

The overheating takes around 15 - 20 mins to start, usually, although sometimes i've driven 30 mins with no probs.

Oddly, the temp guage never goes above 2/3rds of max, & NEVER into the red. More often than not, the guage reads normal, yet the expansion tank bubbles away.

I changed the thermostat 2 weeks ago (which I'd only changed the year before), & the IM gasket. The water pump was also replaced last year, so not that (unless I got a dodgy one). I tried a spare expansion tank cap (although this was not a new one).

I thought I had solved the prob today, when I discovered that the IM jiggle valve was gunked up. This was cleaned, & a steady flow of water now flows from it.

I can't see any circulation of the water in the expansion tank. Nothing seems to be coming from the top hose, back into the tank. I put a stream of water through the hose from the jiggle valve pipe, back to the expansion tank to check for a blockage, but it was clear.

I drained the cooling system tonight, & flushed the radiator with a hose, until it ran clear. Put bottom hose back on the rad, rad filled from the top hose, bleed screw removed & replaced when a steady stream of water emerged.

Thought that the jiggle valve was the culprit, but when I left the car idling tonight, the water started boiling after about 20 mins. Temp guage still showing below half way. No water at all in expansion tank now, 40 mins after turning off engine, but I know it's hiding somewhere in the engine, as when this has happened before, & been topped up, the water reappears quickly, & overflows in the tank.

Heaters are temperamental. Sometimes hot, sometimes warm. The heat can often increase when I turn the heating on & off a few times quickly, making me think that there is a temperamental water circulation prob(?).

No mayo in oil. No oil in water. No white steam from exhaust. No loss of power. No coolant loss (apart from what overflows from expansion tank, when overheating).

Is this just a stubborn airlock?

It's really starting to annoy me now.

Looking forward to hearing your input! Cheers.
