Mgf VVC Failed Mot

My MGF VVC has failed its mot on emissions.



The guy doing the test tried to get it up to temp but the temp started creeping up so he stopped....the radiator fan did not come on.



He advised that it 'could' be a dodgy coolant temp sensor so I have today tried to test this out by unplugging the sensor. I was expecting the fan to come on but it didn't unless it is very quiet.



I have ordered a new sensor anyway but is there any other reason why the fan doesn't kick in. He said it felt free so it is not seized up.



The car doesn't lose any water, the heater is hot and there are no signs of mayo but the temp does rise if stood in traffic for long periods......turning the heater on seems to settle the temp.



So first I need to find the reason for the non-working fan then solve the emissions puzzle.



Any advice would be great.
