replaced alternator now car won't turn over

Hi all - the charging circuit light on my 1.4 zr was not going out and a multimeter test showed the alternator was not charging the battery. I have replaced the alternator - fairly easy thanks to other forum posts, thanks all! - and when I have tried to start the car (with a spare battery hooked up on booster cables to ensure a good charge) the dashboard lights lit up ok but when I turn the key the engine doesn't turn and all I get is a loud noise like a high pitched (sort of) tick tick tick squeak-like noise. Any ideas please - the car started fine before the alternator problem? It couldn't be related to the immobiliser could it? Any advice much appreciated.
