Rover 45 speedo?

Hi
my Rover 45 speedo dont work!!! its a year 2000 1.4

the speedo bounced around like a rev counter so i replaced the speedo sensor that screws in the top of the gearbox and now nothing ... annoying as i want to get it MOT'ed and use it ..

any ideas what if any other part is prone to breaking??

is this common or am I unlucky!!!!
