Petrol tank problem, any help?

Hi I am new to the site not long bought a 2005 MG zr and when I took it to the petrol station to fill up I noticed that the pump would not go into the hole correctly to fill up with petrol and it kept spilling out so after losing about 3 quids worth of fuel I tried another way so held the pump back a bit and it started taking the petrol without spilling back out, any ideas about what this could be? Thanks in advance!
