Starter Problem

Went to pick up a rather tired MGF that has been a little neglected and left standing for a couple of months. New battery produced just a 'clunk' and the engine not turning over. Starter motor is getting warm and everything seems to be tight. Someone suggested that the starter may be stuck so tried knocking it without any success. Anyone got an idea of how to approach this? I saw somewhere that taking a live feed to the small connector on the solenoid may be a work around. Will bump starting it free the starter off?
