Relative values

I know I really should get out more but it was raining today and I was bored enough to make some comparisons...!

In 1969 I bought a 1958 MGA for £200. A pretty good buy you might think as you'd be hard pressed to find anything under £20k today. It was 11 years old with unknown (but vast) mileage, an army of previous owners, the usual rust problems and carbs that were easy to balance but needed doing weekly and a 3000-mile service interval... 1489cc gave 72bhp, which was plenty enough to make it 'fast' compared with the Morris Oxfords of the day. It was a delight to drive.

Recently I bought an '02 TF for £1500. It is 12 years old, with 18,000 miles on the clock, one previous owner and in better condition than some new cars I've had. Frighteningly complex to work on, but maintenance is up to date with service intervals that need a calendar.

However its 1796cc gives 135bhp, which makes it merely 'quick' compared to my 1590c diesel MPV which has 110bhp and more torque. But, it is a delight to drive.

According to the Web the £200 I paid for the MGA is now worth at least £2700 (or up to £5000 depending on the reference used) in today's money - so does that makes the TF an incredible bargain and will mine be worth its £150,000 purchase price and a further 10 times increase in 55 years hence?

(Frankly who cares? I just love driving it and looking it - the kids can take any profit!)
