Stupid heater knob!!!!! A quick How To.

A couple of weeks ago my heater temperature knob suddenly didn't feel quite right and I couldn't reduce the temperature enough to be comfortable (with hood up).

Sooo after a lot of head scratching and reading I found this was the problem. Others have had problems with the other end of this cable but this was my issue. This photo was taken from the drivers foot well.

The red sheath should be held by the clamp you can just about see in the photo. It isn't so no way to control the temp . Worse the clamp has a metal plate under it preventing access without a complete strip down. so here is a quick How too.

1. Disconnect the battery or you could easily short something.

2. remove the two panels either side of the centre console (the ones with the lights in)

3. Remove the radio, the centre console and disconnect the switches and dials It should lever out quite easily but the gear knob needs to come off too.

4. Remove the heater and fan knobs. (I did this with two flat blade screwdrivers) The chrome rings managed to remove themselves.

5. Remove the two screws holding the plastic facia and remove the facia. You should now see 4 screws holding the heater console, 2 on the front and two underneath.

6. Remove the 4 screws.

7. Remove the 2 plastic nuts which hold the two parts together with a 10mm spanner or socket.

8. Remove the 3 screws holding the metal plate to the heater console.

9. Now the metal plate is out of the way you can get to the screw which holds the offending clamp. I removed the clamp and flattened it a little, then cut a bit of self amalgamating rubber which I lined the clamp with to try and stop it happening again, then I sprayed the mechanism with silicon before reassembling everything.

Tools required

Phillips screwdriver

10mm spanner

Flat screwdriver.

Tools which made it a bit easier.

1/4" socket set

Stumpy Phillips screwdriver

Long Phillips screwdriver

Stumpy flat screwdriver.

All back together again with my stumpy gear lever even more stumpy as I managed to push it a bit further down when refitting it..
