2005 diesel; fuel pumps, replace before breakdown?

Hi, I've a late 05 diesel tourer, lovely automatic car with high spec and I'm planning to hold onto it for as long as possible. It's only done 75K and it has been very reliable in the 2 years that I've had it.

Because of work, I really can't afford breakdowns, especially when you consider emergency repairs of our older cars - the mainstream garages wouldn't be much help in the area where I live, but I'm lucky to have a great mechanic who works in the evenings, I buy any parts that are needed and he looks after the jobs that I can't do.

I know there's only so much you can do to avoid breakdowns, but I was wondering would it be worth fitting a brand new in-tank pump? I suspect that this is the most likely thing to go in the next couple of years.

Am I right in thinking that the later cars only have an in-tank pump and not one in the engine bay?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this.
