Ok.........Confused

In my 97 420SLDI i have got play the accelerator pedal mechanism, has anyone else had this same problem? Tried to find a brand new one is impossible (discontinued part), i have been told that the petrol and the diesel pedal mechanisms are different to each other?! but then been told by a different source that they arent?! Can anyone shed any light? Regards Tom
