Fuel gauge ghost readings!

The fuel gauge on my 2002 TF acts quite strangely, and will catch me out one day!

What should the fuel gauge do when the ignition is turned off? Should it move to empty, or is it normal to settle on half a tank?

When the car is parked for a day or two, the needle creeps up to the middle mark, regardless of how low the fuel level is. This happens even with the ignition turned off.

It looks like I have half a tank when i set off, but could be completely empty.

After a few Minuits it then creeps back to where it should be!

According to the wiring diagram the feed to the level switch comes from the ignition switch, and so should be OFF when the ignition is OFF, but also passes through the ECU, and the gauge has three wires, the supply (presumably for the bulb) also switched through the ignition switch.

Thanks

peter
