Noisy air conditioning

Hi , my aircon makes a whirring / groaning sound when switched on . Thempo of the sound increases with the engine revs . It blows cold but the noise is unpleasant at low speeds . The noise seems to be transmitted to the glovebox area . Could it be a tired compressor or bearings ?
