Horrible noise while trying to start

The head has been rebuilt and fitted. All the timing marks line up on the cams and crank pully. Distributor is on. The whole thing turns over by hand for as long as as I want to keep turning.



Now for the kicker.



When I turn the key it doesnt start and sounds like there is a bag of marbles in there somewhere.



has anyone got any genius ideas as to what it might be. I would so much like to get this thing running for my hill climb at weekend
