MGF MY2000 Petrol Smell

Evening all.

I bought a 2001 MGF 1.6 last week - bought it on a whim and (mostly) enjoying it.

However, there is a smell of petrol in the car when you're moving. It's not so noticeable when the hood and windows are up but on opening the drivers window whilst moving earlier it was pretty strong and it's present with the hood and windows down whilst you're moving.

The car has been into a local MG Rover specialist today to have the suspension pumped up and I asked them to investigate.

They reported that they removed the engine cover and couldn't find any sign of leaking on the fuel pump clamps etc.

I've just popped my nose into the central tunnel inside the car and there doesn't seem to be much of a smell there. There's a bit of a whiff if you put your nose up to the filler cap with it locked shut and no pressure if you unlock it when I've tried that so far but the hasn't had more than a third of a tank in it every time I've tried this.

I also just had a good sniff of the near side cooling vent and there's a whiff to be found there but nothing of note if you poke your head in the rear section of the engine bay, with the car running or not.

So... is it likely to be the tank has gone porous given this is an MY2000 car with the later fuel tank?

As above I'm enjoying the car overall but this is spoiling it for me.
