V6 engine cover - just a vanity thing?

Hi,

The 180 we just pruchased has the plastic engine cover missing. I asume the cover is purely a vanity thing and has no function. Just wanted to check though, to see if leaving it off is OK or whether there is some "secret" function that I am not aware of! :)
