Changing Front Discs / pads question MG ZR

Does anyone know what the small thin bit of metal is across the top of the brake pads and discs is that's held within the caliper as I am changing my brakes tonight and one of these caused an awful noise and distorted a while ago and I am thinking of removing it/them.



Anyone able to advise as to what could be the issue of removing these?
