vvc alignment

Hey people, just joined the forum. Was wondering if anyone coyld help me out with my vvc mechanism, I have the pulleys lined up but im unsure what position the toothed piston is supposed To be in, I'm waiting on valves so I'm not yet at the point of refitting the cover, I dont have any photos at the min but any help would be appreciated :-)
