1999Rover216 CVT

These cars fitted with the ZF VT1-13a CVT gearbox can be plagued with unpleasant characteristics, jerky engagement of gear particularly Drive, 'driving on' when braking to a halt, and rattles from the torsion damper. These are the result of poor servicing, particularly the use of incorrect transmission fluid, and also drivers failing to read and comply with the owners handbook in relation to how to drive a CVT car. This gearbox was also fitted to the Rover100 of the same era and I ran one for four years (56,000m) and the CVT box wasa pleasureto drive. I purchased a 216 in very good cosmetic condition at a bargain price displaying some of the faults referred to, the basic problem was with forward clutch operation as a result of the abuses mentioned. the gearbox has been replaced and the car drives like a new car. My point is beware of cars with jerky gear take up but it is a solvable problem but will cost. Chris S.
