Strange issue with replacement wiper motor - operates headlight beam!?

Fitted a replacement (used) front wiper motor to my Rover 400 today as the original motor had become very noisy. After connecting it all up I found that it was dead - absolutely no response from the wiper motor. HOWEVER, something else strange was happening. When using the wiper stalk, it was operating the motors for the headlamp beam heigh adjustment!



My dad and I checked the wires on the replacement wiper motor and compared it to the original - all 100% exactly the same, and the same part no. too.



Has anyone experienced this before? Or any idea why this would happen?
