liner height and gasket failure

hey all, looking for some advice with engine problem. I bought a cheap 45 1.8 K off ebay for pulling the caravan ..cough.. misses around and for work use. been running fine until last week when engine overheated from low coolant and running like a tractor now.

Anyway, easy fix I thought as I got some experience of these engines with changing a few HG's in the past.

Did a quick HG change and in my rush to get it back running I overlooked to check the cylinder liner heights before fitting the MLS gasket. The liners all seemed flat with the engine block but there were some deep ring indentations in the surface of the cylinder head, which I also neglected to skim.

The cooling system was througly flushed and both ways before refilling and the car starts and runs smoothly until engine temperature is at mid point and thermo opens. Engine then starts to hunt/misfire with clouds of

steam from exhaust (no overheating).

The engine refuses to start after this with hydrolock from cylinder No.3 which is also filling with coolant. heaters also always blowing cold.

Not wanting to sell as scrap, I am wondering this could be result of the liners being flush ?

or could a crack in the cylinder head be allowign the coolant into that particular cylinder ?

or would the elastomer gasket have been more suitable for the flush liners ?

thanks.
