Diagnostic scanner

Have 3 ZRs in the household. All 2005 1.4 petrol facelift models. Got some jiggly stuff on each of them. Dodgy central locking, etc. been looking at the diagnostic scanners that are out there. Anyone got any recommendations? Seems they start around £20 but don't wanna waste money if the cheap ones are crap. Do I need to then read all the data on a laptop? If so do I need software
