Can anyone help me?
I have a 2004 MG ZR , which has got some cooling issues. My problem is that the engine gets up to temperature ok but then overheats, found a thread about the ranco valve that sounded hopeful, and I've managed to figure out a few things. The car has had a head gasket/skim done by a garage a few years back.
Looking near the bulkhead I can see it has the SAAB/Ranco valve across the heater circuit, and the heater control valve is also nearby under the bonnet (the cable operated heater control valve/cable is working fine).
Feeling the temperature of the hoses when the engine is warmed up, on the top hose going to the radiator its only hot on the end near the engine, the return hose on the bottom or the rad is cold. So nothing
going thru the rad.
First time I checked the smaller pipe that runs from the same corner, around to the heater control valve area was hot, but only up to the ranco valve , its hot where it goes into the heater control valve but not the other side (the cable is moving the valve arm fine, but doesn't result in any heat going thru the piping to the heater matrix).
Some history incase any of this is a clue in what whats been going on....
For some time I have noticed lots of condensation inside the car. The car had been running fine, when I was checking under the bonnet I noticed that the expansion bottle was empty, and added some coolant.
When i first had the problem I made a ten mile journey and noticed a spluttering noise underneath the bonnet. When I opened the bonnet, the coolant bottle was spraying stuff out. I then left it to cool down. I then drove back home cautiously below 2000 revs keeping it just below the 75% heat mark on the temperature gauge.
Having read some of the posts about the ranco valve rubber 'washer' coming out and getting stuck in the thermostat i decided to have this valve off and have a look inside it, but the valve seems ok (if you press the valve from the side without the Tee you can feel the spring move ok (its fairly light tho - not sure if this is normal). I also tried flushing the heater matrix with a hosepipe and water flows thru fine, with the cable control valve in either position).
Then re installed it all, left the bleed bolt (8mm bolt on metal pipe) open while slowly filling until some fluid seen, then continued filling.
When i ran the engine, it gets up to temp, but the rad top pipe only warm at the engine end (bottom big pipe cold) and also the smaller pipes around the ranco valve are also only coolish, heater also cold, despite engine being up to temp.
So im thinking now, what could it be?
airlock of some sort?
Pump failed?
Stat stuck closed?
Is there some trick to bleeding the cooling sys on these engines?, I dont
have any manuals etc,
Hope someone can you help?, tried posting this on another thread but got no replies :(
