Cylinder head gasket

When I bought my MG ZS+ last week everybody and his dog said,' Oh better what out for the cylinder head gasket on them, they're bad for that cost you £400 to get that fixed'. What are the symptoms of this? I had to put anti-freeze in the car when I got it as there wasn't much in it. I went for a long drive last night (about 70 miles) country roads, some motorway and opened her up abit too. This morning I checked the fluids, oil was fine (max, no water), power steering fine, brake fluid fine but the water reservoir needed topped up again after 220 miles in 10 days! There's no yellowish deposits in the oil (somebody told me that was a sign).
