Smoking TF!

Hi, Just acquired a 53 plate TF soft top which has been standing for over a year. Having got it home and fitted a charged battery I tried to start it up. As expected it was very tight and sluggish, but it eventually fired up. There was a definite squeal from what sounded like the alternator, (expected rusty or corroded pulleys so not really worried) but then noticed smoke from the "front" end of the engine. Definite smell of hot insulation, engine was stopped and smoke cleared, no signs of fire etc. On re try the engine is very sluggish on the starter and would not restart, even after its short run, though it had seemed to tick over quite freely and squeal eased off after about thirty seconds. I'm totally new to this car, but have done all my own servicing on my numerous vehicles over the years. Any suggestions as to where to start looking would be gratefully received.
