Better quality O/E CATs seem to be worth it.
It's often mentioned on these very forums that the CAT's on MGF's don;t seem to do very well in the emissions test for the MOT after a year of two. Now I am assuming here that these are often aftermarkets ones like those from Bosal and Klarius and even othr unnamed brands.
In fact I fitted a Klarius new CAT to "Elsie" for her MOT last September and whilst she passed the CO level was 0.13% and she also had a brand new Lambada sensor fitted.
This morning I took "Blue 33" for her retest after the remedial work was done yesterday which included a new O/S/F lower ball joint, changing the drop link for one on which the rubbers were not splitting apart and fitting a new O/E Cat.
She sailed through with none of the mucking about blocking one tail pipe. here are her readings:-
Fast Idle Test
CO = 0.00%
HC = 7 ppm
^ = 1.010
Natural Idle test
CO = 0.00%
We have two advisory Items :-
O/S/F tyre wearing on inner edge ...worn ball joint the cause
N/S/F drop link bushes deteriorated
When the weather improves a bit I will change the N/S one. Will get the aligment re-checked and adjusted if needed and start putting money aside for new tyres.
Last year "Blue 33" still had her original exhaust fitted and her readigns were:-
Fast Idle Test
CO = 0.05%
HC = 23 ppm
^ = 1.001
Natural Idle Test
CO =0.02%
And that was with a 17 years exhaust and CAT fitted. It would appear there is something to be said for O/E CAT's after all!
It will interesting to see how "Eslie" does on the emissions in September with the Klarius CAT fitted.
