rover 25 diesel wont fire up

hi, i have a rover 25 diesel 2l 2001 and till now ive never had any problems starting it. usually fires up immediately upon turning the key.

anyway on tuesday night i got in it and went to the shop and all was fine however when i came back out of the shop 10 mins later the car would not start. after about 10 mins of trying it i finally got it started and drove home however next morning was the same again.

myself and my dad did a few checks to see if the battery had plenty of power and the glow plugs were getting the power. we also checked the fuel filter and that there was fuel getting to the engine all seemed ok so we thought dirt perhaps.

next day we got a rope and he towed me and the car fired up when towed so i drove it about a while and it was driving well. i went into the house and came out half an hour later to check it and it fired up ok again however an hour later i went out and it wouldnt start again.

i went down today and got cleaner that you pour into the fuel tank and an air filter as we noticed that was done and also a fuel filter, fitted all them and the car would not start still.

so i got another tow to get me up and running in the hope if it was dirt the cleaner would work its way through if i drove it about a while. i also went to the garage and put another £20 of diesel in it to bring it from a quarter full to over halfway.

anyway i drove the car about for 20 miles. it was driving great and quieter than it had been for as long as i can remember. i stopped a few times including 10 mins in the shop and the car started fine however when i went into the house and came out and checked it 2 hrs late its back to the same problem again.

basically car turning over well but not firing up, battery plenty of power, glow plugs seem to be getting required power, orange glow light goes out after 2 secs, fuel seems to be getting to the engine, has a new fuel filter, starts on a tow and will restart when turned off but wont restart if its been left off more than a few minutes.

anybody any ideas cos this is doing my head in?
