the poor idling saga continues...

well, after limping it round this past 10 days, i managed to get it into a rover specialist in nuneaton today.

amazingly, he's as clueless as i am as to whats causing it, no HGF or IM gasket symptoms, and says that me changing the anti freeze is purely coincidental to the idling fault occurring immediately after.

after testing several things, the conclusion is that ;

its running very rich,

I'd noticed its using a lot of fuel, its doing about 70 miles to £20, my other car (mondeo 3.0 v6) does over 100 miles in comparison, so was suspecting something was amiss.

also, there was an intermittent fault coming up on the scanner of the front lambda sensor, but upon clearing it, and while the car was being tested, this didnt show up after the 2nd time it was cleared.

so. been advised to change the HT leads, the coil packs are in good order, but the leads are very brittle, one broke upon removal. but another used by garage didnt make a difference to the running of the vehicle. also been advised to change the coolant sensor, it appears to be working, but as it costs £5, not really ignoring the "could be" possibility.

If neither of these rectify the issue, a emissions check would be the next route to take, to confirm our suspicions its running rich, with the potential of changing the front lambda sensor, but looking at the data on my scanner it seems to be functioning perfectly well.

All in all, im hoping this isnt an electrical gremlin, the fact a "specialist" is stumped really fills me with confidence!

stay tuned folks!
