Another 25 saved after a failed HG!
A good friend of mine, who also has a 25, had his HG replaced by a mechanic friend, a couple of years ago. It ran fine afterwards. A couple of weeks ago though, he noticed the dreaded boiling noise from the expansion tank, & raised temperature. I knew he'd had an MLS gasket fitted, & I told him about the low or uneven liners prob, when fitting an MLS.
Anyway, I loaned him my trade card to get the bits, & he got the Payen BW750 gasket, as I suspected that he had the same low liner problem as my car. He also got new head bolts (old ones were reused last time), thermostat, timing belt, water pump, PAS & Alt belts, & img & exhaust gaskets. Quite a pile of parts!! Oh! And a new radiator.
His liners were pretty even, but level with the block. It should never have had the MLS gasket fitted last time. Lots of carbon on the faces of the block & head too. Head was nice & flat. Good that he'd stopped driving it as soon as he noticed the problem.
10 hours work yesterday, & a few hours today, & the car is purring like a kitten, & driving well. No airlocks, heater scorching hot :)
Only one mishap during the rebuild. The water pump bolt that goes through the evaporator snapped. Plenty of thread left sticking out the block, so it wound out with a pair of pliers. A quick trip to the breakers, & we had another bolt.
There was almost a disaster before we started work though. He couldn't loosen the crank pulley bolt, so he took it to a local garage, & asked them just to crack it off, so he could drive home (about half a mile), so we could start the job the next morning. The guy not only cracked it off, but he had wound it half out!! My mate had no power steering on the drive home. When I went underneath, the pulley was at a hell of an angle, & spinning freely!! I got the bolt out with my hand; no tools needed! When I got the cambelt cover off, the belt was overhanging the camshaft sprockets by about 7mm! When I got the bottom cover off, the belt had been rubbing against the cover, & gouged a trough out of it. He was pretty lucky he got back home!!
It was a good couple of days work, despite the cold northern weather, & odd downpour :)
Another 25 still on the road!
