Guess the engine problem

The other half's car is being problematic, the main issue is occasional starting problems, the car takes a little while to start, then stalls almost immediately. It took a lot of cranking to get it to start again, a big puff of blue smoke when it did start again, but this cleared quickly. Idle was about 1,500 which seems quite high. After a minute or so of idling a lot of white steam started coming from the exhaust which isn't usual.

Tried starting it again about 20 mins later and it started fine with no sign of steam from the exhaust.

The coolant level is right at the minimum mark on the expansion bottle, other half doesn't remember what the level was last time she opened the bonnet though . . .

So, any suggestions for the problem? When there was lots of steam in the exhaust I was thinking headgasket, but the oil is clear.

Engine is a Toyota 1.3 as used in the yaris and so on.
