Today I was mostly ( MG ZT content )
Fixing the boot lock on my MG ZT.
Over the past few weeks, using the Key to manually release the boot lid lock, the operation became increasingly more vague. This week it gave up altogether. I could only release the boot electrically using the release switch inside the car.
That's asking for trouble so decided to have a look. After all, have fixed problem boot and hatch locks on 25s an ZSs. The one on the ZT was rather more difficult to access. However, after removing the boot lid liner, lots of plastic fastener, I removed the whole lock assembly ~ two large posidrive self tappers into the plastic of the lock mechanism. Bit crude but, it works.
Back indoors, I inserted the key into the lock and rotated the key in both directions as far as it would go. I could see that the CAM was not engaging the microswitch. Releasing the little snap ring, partly dismantled the lock and a little piece of metal dropped away. It was about 3mm long and 1mm thick. Slightly curved. Even so, I reassembled the lock and still no joy. I again dismantled and looked more closely at how the slots, spring and various lugs located. Still not sure that it could be returned to full working condition. On the third reassembly, not only did the Key engage properly in the lock, but, the CAM actually made contact with the Microswitch. Pleased that the lock appears to be fully working now .... off the car.
Carefully put it back into the boot lid and connected the little multiplug connector and the actuator rod to the centrally located main locking mechanism. I then used a screwdriver to "lock" the main locking mechanism with the boot still open ( did not want to close the boot lid to find it did not work! ) and was pleased to observe the lock released with the Key manually as it should. Did that manual check operation several times before closing the boot. The key released the boot as it should with the boot lid fully closed. Looks like it's sorted. Another productive hour or so learning the how to on this little job. What part that little piece of broken metal plays in the boot release lock I have no idea. Pleased it works fine despite that.
I attach five images taken during the work.
