Clutch reservior emptied on way home

One of my worst nightmares.

Coming home on the motorway and exiting on the slip to suddenly find my clutch pedal going right to the floor with no return.
I'm in fifth gear at this point with no way to gear down.
All I could do was pull over to the hard shoulder on the slip (thank god it had one) and let the car stall.

I knew the fluid must have gone as the pedal wouldn't stay up and there was no pressure.

Now I could have called the AA but being a stubborn git, I put her into third, turned the key and bump started on the starter motor.
I know I know, that's bad for the starter motor etc. etc. but I had
appointments to keep so a new or second hand starter was acceptable if needed.

3 miles at 30 mph (hazards on) with no way of disengaging the clutch and hoping for no hold ups. I was lucky. It was a straight run and the village was quiet. I pulled up on the drive and stalled her.
It was funny how a few cars passed me and put their hazards on as if telling me I'd left mine on by mistake!

20 mins later everything was back to normal - I love my Ezi-bleed kit.

The only source of a leak I could find was a little dampness under the slave seal. I changed the seals a couple of years ago but maybe a new slave cylinder is needed.

Obviously all my fault for not regularly checking my reservior level so be assured that I gave myself a damn good mental telling off.

That was 3 days ago and everything is still hunky dory.

Just thought I'd share.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
