TF160 - Coolant Issue Diagnosis

TF160 - Coolant Issue Diagnosis

Hi everyone, first time post and apologies for the long story.

I have recently, about a month ago, become the owner of a fantastic TF160. As a previous 135 owner I knew what I was getting into. Now, knowing to keep a constant eye on signs of HGF and general overheating (reason for selling previous one) I have been vigilant in the last month and noticed the following:
When I bought the car, it had had a new HG (MLS), new timing belt, water pump and general service/MOT as part of the deal. It has got low mileage, 53 plate and only 48K.
The coolant overflow was around half an inch above the middle line of the tank. All the other fluids fine. After a week I saw a little mayo half way up the dipstick, panicked, called the dealer and told him. His response was that condensation is causing the mayo, I think this is verified since I went for a long drive and checked afterwards and the mayo was gone. At this point I noticed that the coolant level had dropped to about half an inch below the half way line. I have a block tester and fluid left from my old car, so I bought some fresh fluid and tested for gasses in the coolant to signify a HGF. Negative, fluid remained blue. A little soothed I have kept an eye on the reservoir tank and the level has stayed at the same point for the last few days.
Now for the odd bit, when I tested the HG with the block tester, the car had done a 10 minute journey to get it warm, and I took the expansion tank lid off, the level rose to the half way point as the pressure was relieved in the system. I checked the following morning when it was completely cold and it was at the half way mark, but once at work (10-15minute drive) it was back down to an inch below.
No visible white marks of a leak, no spots on the ground where it’s parked. Sounds normal, clattery when cold, better when hot. Went for a 3-400 mile round trip the other weekend with no problems. The temp gauge in the cabin rises steadily when warming up to just below half and stays there constantly through motorway cruise and traffic.
Am I panicking over nothing?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
