Re-assemby - front brake caliper

Earlier in the year I noticed that one of the front wheels was binding a little and when I took the caliper off, it seemed like the problem was that one pad had got stuck due to a combination of muck and rust. The sliders and the piston seemed OK. So I cleaned it up and put it back on.

Over the weekend, I came back from a short drive and could feel heat radiating from that same wheel and again found it was binding. So I've dismantled the caliper again and this time the pads seemed to be free, but the piston seem pretty stuck, but I managed to blow it out. The surfaces of both the piston and the cylinder look pretty good, no obvious sign of why it should be sticky (ok - nearly 20 years old). I'm a bit dubious about the quality of some of the "re-furbished" calipers on the market, so decided I'd re-build this one and ordered a service kit to replace all the rubber bits. Only problem is that I cannot see what is holding in the dust boot; there's normally something like a big circlip, but I cannot see it. Anyone know? Actually, the dust boot seems to be in very good condition. When I've serviced calipers on other cars, I've always put the boot on after the piston is back in in. I suppose I could get the piston to go back in with the old boot still in place ?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
