Are our gasoline injectors undersized ?


Few weeks ago during a Track day meeting near Rome I met some people with standard and tuned Fiat 500/595 Abarth (140-160 hp someone claiming 200 and more) we amused talking about tuning, the std engine 1,4 T develops 135 hp @ a 5750 rpm with std 270 cc injectors, but they fit 330, 350 cc and directly to the gasoline fuel station pump (I’m sure they increase the fuel rail pressure)
When I explained my 135 Kmaps was running with Black 176 cc @ 3 bar and my friend’s F pumped with a 160VCC just with Cream 200-218cc @3,5 bar. They started laughing, ahah 200 cc and 160 hp ahah.
So I started investigating our injectors capabilities, Pulse Width, recommended injectors.
Rolling some simple calculations I determined the required amount of fuel for 135 hp @ 6800 rpm, based on Vol Eff 85%, AFR 12,5. For std Black inj. Bosch cod 280-155-884 the required fuel delivery is 33,2 mgr/shot = PW 14,5 ms.
But 14,5 ms represents 592° of crank rotation (the max is 720° to complete a full cycle),
If I’m Correct our Black injector remains open the 82% of the time = 82% duty cycle
Obviously this occurs at 6800 rpm /135 hp, but cruising at 3.000 rpm and 60% load and AFR 14.7 we need just 102 degrees for 11,8 mg/shot.
This means that at full load conditions the injector sprays for more than 50% against the closed head of the inlet valve, according to some literature this should not be so bad, providing additional valve cooling and better gasoline vaporisation.
I asked for confirmation to Mark (Kmaps) but after a first replay (AFR and VE) nothing more.
The 160 VVC is even worst 640°, 90% duty cycle.
Are our injector undersized ? I hope I’m missing something and not to be another Rover cost saving project.
