1.4K Running rich

Hi, I have a Rover 100 1.4 SPI K engine in a kit car that is running very rich, engine has trouble ticking over, revs pick up very slowly from tickover, plugs black and sooty.

Im going to change the air filter, plugs,rotor arm and order a coolant sensor today to see if it improves things. Whilst looking for solutions to my problem I came across this page:

that says that NGK plugs can interfere with the ECU on the rover, has anyone else heard anything along these lines.
