cam belt tensioner broke...help pzzzzz

Hi all....I was driving home today and heard a sort of rattle noise....then lost all power....called rescue...when they got there they told me the cam belt tensioner had gone....basically the belt hasn't broke it was still there...the breakdown man told me the tensioner had gone...does this mean the worse cylinder head mash up....or could it just of jumped a tooth and be miss timed now....and hopefully get away with just a cam belt and tensioner replacement...thanks for any help.....Adam
