Rover 25. Cold running problems

Hi, have bought a 2003 25 about a week ago and have discovered that when cold, it has very little power, is shakey, and cuts out at the first or second junction. starts on the button but after the cut out, is harder to start. This goes away when warm but i still feel it is underpowered as my 1995 1.3 corolla was far punchier. Would really appreciate help but i know you guys may be bored reading the same old stuff.
