Glow plug warming noise?

Ok, excuse my ignorance but I'm sure whenever I've started my ZS I've not only waited for the glowplug warming light to extinguish but have also waited for the faint high pitched whining noise to stop before turning the ignition.

Now the light comes on and goes off as normal but there is absolutely no sound and starting is very sluggish compared to how it was before the timing belts were changed.

Am I imagining there was ever a noise in the first place or is this a sign something isn't quite right?

I've had the timing checked as well as the glowplug relay changed and checked the fuses but still no improvement.
