Need help with starter engine

Hi all, Tried to start my very old MGF (1997). But the starter didn't even click. The car has been standing for quite a long time. But when push started the engine roared without a problem. I tried then to turn the starter while the engine was running, normally you get that nasty noise of gears scratching, but nothing the starter didn't make any noise. I'm not sure if the problem is the starter or some fuse or the ignition key. Can anybody give me a hint to what should I test for and how difficult will be to change the starter motor.
